With yung, his second EP on drink sum wtr in roughly a year, Queens rapper Deem Spencer lets loose more goods from his time with producer Jackson Pittman, sessions that prioritized potency and simplicity. The "no features, one producer" framework of 2024's all these crying birds EP holds true for yung, a call back to his DIY days, self-releasing free-spoken tracks akin to "audio diaries" (Pitchfork).
"These songs are some of my favorites from my sessions with Jackson," says Spencer. "Originally, I was saving them for my next album until it was revealed to me, months ago, what the next album would actually be. I'm happy to share these songs now."
Backed by stuttering beats (plus a steel drum vibe on "even..."), the three-track set showcases Deem's knack for playful verses with low-key hooks. He presents it with a fittingly tight summary: "'Even if it is tho' is a cute bop with a message of resilience. 'Guy R Brewer' is an ode to my hometown of Jamaica, Queens. 'Monster' is a cheeky plea of innocence. Each song, very different in their own respects, presents the qualities of myself I'm most proud of."
